Losing Control 61

Losing Control

Ruby: Chase came asking for him today.
Riddick: What did she say?
Ruby: That it must be somehow my fault that Zeke went away.
Riddick: Don't pay any attention to that. It was his fault.
Ruby: But maybe... if I hadn't been shouting at him...
Riddick: Little shouting occasionally is quite all right, if you're not getting yourself heard otherwise. Getting aggressive and breaking stuff is definitely not all right.

Cherry: Excuse me, where can I find Ruby? Oh, I think I already know. The one with red and black hair, right? Those always were his favorite colors...
Riddick: That's Ruby. What do you want from her?
Cherry: None of your business.

Losing Control 63

Losing Control

Cherry: You’re Ruby, aren’t you?
Ruby: Yes. Should I know you?
Cherry: No, we haven't met, but we have a mutual friend, if you could call him that.
Ruby: Who are you talking about?
Cherry: The hairy guy.
Ruby: Zeke. How do you know about me and him?
Cherry: I met Sleepy. It's been years since we last met and he actually came looking for me. He was still asking the same question: What went wrong? Only this time he had a valid reason to ask.

Losing Control 64

Losing Control

Ruby: So you're the ex-girlfriend. The previous ex-girlfriend, I mean.
Cherry: You're not taking him back? Good for you. You look like you're much too nice to be messing around with guys like him. Don't get me wrong, he isn't exactly bad, but you need strong will of your own to cope with him.
Ruby: Is that why you came here? To tell me that?
Cherry: Partly. Also, I was curious. I wanted to see you.
Ruby: Well, you have seen me. What now?
Cherry: Now? I guess you could fix me a drink and then we can talk, if you want to.

Next day:
Ruby: Hi, Kitty. Is Mary at home?
Kitty: She's still at school. But I guess you didn't really come to see her, did you?
Ruby: Not really.
Kitty: Come in. Bea is already at home, but she's upstairs doing her homework. That should keep her busy for some time.

Losing Control 66

Losing Control

Kitty: So, do you want to talk about it or ask me something?
Ruby: Both, I guess. - Did Riddick tell you about Cherry?
Kitty: Yes. Of course I knew about her then, although I never met her.
Ruby: Did you know what Zeke is like?
Kitty: No, I had no idea. I'm still having a hard time believing he could do something like that.
Ruby: Do you think I'm a horrible person for not even thinking of giving him a second chance?

Losing Control 67

Losing Control

Kitty: No. He knew what your life was like before. That makes his actions even worse than they would normally be. You need to think about yourself.
Ruby: Riddick said Zeke is the wrong kind for me.
Kitty: He may be right. You should find someone nice and normal. No shape changing, no aggression, none of that macho stuff.
Ruby: There aren't that many nice and normal guys around in these parts.
Kitty: I have noticed that. Don't worry, you'll find someone sooner or later.

Losing Control 68

Losing Control

Bea: What's shape changing?
Kitty: Bea, were you eavesdropping?
Bea: I didn't drop anything.
Ruby: Hehe.
Kitty: Don't try that. You've got quite a vocabulary and you know exactly what I mean.
Bea: I didn't mean to listen. I just heard what you said. - What is shape changing? And who is Zeke?
Ruby: Kitty?
Kitty: I'll explain all that to you later, Bea.

Losing Control 69

Losing Control

Kitty: Did you already finish your homework?
Bea: Yes.
Ruby: Well, maybe you could then show me your room. Mary said you've got the upstairs bedroom now. Or do you have any objections, Kitty?
Kitty: Of course not. Mary should be home soon. I'll tell her you're here when she comes.
Bea: Tell her she doesn't need to hurry. I can keep company to Ruby.
Kitty: All right, I will.

Losing Control 70

Losing Control

Bea: Ruby, who is Zeke?
Ruby: A friend.
Bea: Is he your boyfriend?
Ruby: I shouldn't talk about that with you. Kitty will explain everything you need to know.
Bea: Is he the werewolf? Is that what shape changing means?
Ruby: How do you know about that?
Bea: Miriam told me about werewolves. She says her big brother is part werewolf. She had heard him talk about a werewolf called Zeke. Except the word wasn't werewolf, it was lycan... lycan...
Ruby: Lycanthrope. Yes, that is the correct term. It is rude for adults to call them werewolves.

Losing Control 71

Losing Control

Ruby: Bea, I think you shouldn't tell anyone about this discussion. You see, werewolves... lycanthropes are a secret. Not everybody knows about them and that's how it should be.
Bea: Daniel laughed at us when we told him werewolves exist.
Ruby: Most people would laugh. That's one of the reasons why it's better not to talk about them. You and I know they exist and if you want to talk about it, you can talk with me. All right?
Bea: All right. - Did he make you sad?
Ruby: Zeke? Yes, he did. I don't want to talk about it.

Losing Control 72

Losing Control

Bea: Aunt Chase was sad, but then she went out on a date with Miriam's big brother and she was happy.
Ruby: Did she? Interesting.
Bea: You should go out on a date too. Maybe it would make you happy.
Ruby: Bea, I appreciate the effort, but I'm not in the mood for going out with anybody. And I'll be fine. You shouldn't worry about me. Those are grownup things and you're too young to worry about them.

Losing Control 73

Losing Control

Mary: You two look so serious. What's going on?
Bea: Nothing. We were just talking.
Mary: I see. Bea, would you mind leaving us alone for a moment?
Bea: I know, you're going to talk about grownup things. I'll be in the kitchen.

Losing Control 74

Losing Control

Mary: Grownup things?
Ruby: She was suggesting I should go out on a date with somebody so I wouldn't be sad, and I told her she's too young to worry about grownup things.
Mary: So, it's about Zeke? What did he do? Riddick and Kitty have been so secretive. Stopping conversation when I enter the room and lowering their voices so I haven't been able to figure out what's going on.
Ruby: He went crazy. You see...

Losing Control 75

Losing Control

Mary: How could he?
Ruby: He just did. - I can't deal with stuff like that.
Mary: You mean you're not taking him back?
Ruby: I don't know. He was so ashamed of what he had done. Right now, I just hope he'll stay away. For everybody's sake.
